Concussion with Dr Charlotte Durand

On this weeks episode I sat down and chatted with the amazing and very talented Dr Charlotte Durand. Charlotte is an Emergency Doctor with a passion for exercise, sport and a true lover of the great outdoors. This episode was focused around the topic of Concussion and in my opinion is a great episode for not only clinicians but for parents, families an those interested. We talked about CTE, the history of CTE, brain neurochemistry and how we approach concussion in the ED. 

There is a trigger warning on this episode as Charlotte and myself do talk about themes such as suicide and domestic violence.

Type 1 diabetes - Coby’s story

On this weeks episode I sat down with Coby Wiseman and discussed his diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. Coby comes from a family of emergency clinicians with his mum a lecturer/trauma Nurse and father an Intensive Care Paramedic. The episode also features Professor Maria Craig who is an paediatric endocrinologist, who was Coby doctor when he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. The episode talks through the pathophysiology, treatment, diagnosis and the impact that diabetes has had on coby life and still has on his life.

Hyperbaric medicine with Dr John Mackenzie

On this episode I sat down with Dr John Mackenzie and discussed the complexities of hyperbaric medicine. John discussed indications for hyperbaric treatment, the physiology behind medicine, how the unit works and some interesting cases. DCI, air embolisms, CAGE and even carbon monoxide poising were but a few of the topics discussed on this weeks chat.    His reputation definitely proceeded him and let's just say I am sure this episode is going to be loved by all. Sepsis with Brad and Tino

This episode was an informal conversation with ED CNE Brad and ICU RN Tino on the topic of sepsis. Themes that were discussed included , definitions, management, fluid administration, iv antibiotics, vasopressors and Inotropes. Cardiac Arrest (Adams storey)- with Jeni and Harry Intensive Care paramedics.

Restart the heart, is exactly what Intensive Care Paramedics, Jeni and Harry are trained to do. However generally they are not expected to do it on their fellow paramedics. This episode is about Adam ( a paramedic) who was feeling unwell after a bike ride. Two intensive care paramedics and friends of Adams treated him, then whilst driving things turned south. Themes such as out of hospital Cardiac arrest, treatment of STEMI's, honnest debriefing and family input were raised throughout the episode. The episode will leave you in awe of friendship, a healthy respect for paramedics and a love for the wider healthcare community.

Military Trauma, PTSD and Resilience with Dr Dan Pronk

Chest decompressions in the dark, surgical airways with night vision goggles- a few of the things that Dr Dan Pronk has had to do whilst operating as a Special Operations Doctor in the military. This episode will leave you in awe for not only the people in the military but for all emergency services working under pressurised situations. Dan served the majority of his military career within Special Operations Units, including four tours of Afghanistan and over 100 combat missions. Dan was awarded the Commendation for Distinguished Service for his conduct in action on his second tour of Afghanistan. In this episode, I sat down with Dr Dan Pronk and talked through topics such as military trauma, PTSD and resilience. Dan talked about his experiences with, and management of, trauma patients in the field and what it was like working in these high intensity, high stress environments. Personal reflections on PTSD, loss of identity and purpose also lead to dan writing the resilience shield which was also discussed on this episode.

Shark Attack: a true trauma Story -Brett Connellan & Maddison Stewart

For Brett Connellan, every surfer’s worst nightmare became his reality when he was attacked by a Great White Shark. On this episode of ED Jam, Brett shares his trauma story and how he turned one of the worst days of his life into positive things. I also speak with Shark conservationist Maddison Stewart (aka Shark girl) to discuss some common issues about shark safety and how these 'last dinosaurs' are often misunderstood. Trauma case manager Kate Mann also recalls what she witnessed on the day Brett was airlifted to a major trauma Hospital and describes some key aspects of his medical treatment and care.
